Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority
The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is a state corporation that administers a perpetual trust created to settle litigation over land granted to Alaska in 1956 for mental health purposes. It is unusual: rather than delivering services, it owns roughly a million acres of land and other assets, generates revenue from them through its Trust Land Office, and uses that revenue to fund, plan and advocate for Alaska's comprehensive integrated mental health program. Its statutory beneficiaries are wider than mental illness alone and include Alaskans with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Alzheimer's disease and related dementia, traumatic brain injury, and substance use disorders. It proposes the state's mental health budget and reports to the Legislature and the governor.
