Center for Independent Living, Inc.
Center for Independent Living, Inc. is one of the 28 Independent Living Centers funded and overseen by the California Department of Rehabilitation. Independent Living Centers are run and staffed by a majority of people with disabilities and are open to people of any age with any disability. Like every California ILC it delivers the core independent living services: information and referral, individual and systems advocacy, independent living skills training, peer counseling, and transition support for people moving out of institutions, young people leaving school, and people at risk of being institutionalized. It serves Alameda County. The CIL in Berkeley is the original independent living center, founded in 1972, and the model for the national independent living movement.
