Creative Growth Art Center
Creative Growth, founded in Oakland in 1973, was the world's first independent art studio for artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities and remains the flagship of the disability arts movement. Around 140 artists work in its studio, many with practices sustained over decades, and the center runs a gallery and represents artists commercially. Its artists are held in museum collections including SFMOMA and the Smithsonian. The model it invented in the 1970s was copied into NIAD in Richmond and Creativity Explored in San Francisco.
