Porterville Developmental Center
Porterville Developmental Center is the last of California's developmental centers still operating. DDS describes it as the only state-operated facility serving people in the mild to moderate range of intellectual disability who have come into contact with the legal system, have been found a danger to themselves or others, or have been found incompetent to stand trial. Its Secure Treatment Program provides habilitation, competency training, behavioral and substance-use treatment, education and vocational services to adults 18 and over admitted under Penal Code section 1370.1 or Welfare and Institutions Code section 6500. The general treatment (non-secure) residential program has closed; step-down homes in the community now support people leaving the Secure Treatment Program.
