Gallaudet University
Gallaudet University is the world's only university designed from the ground up to be barrier-free for deaf and hard of hearing students, chartered by Congress in 1864 and operating in Northeast Washington for more than 150 years. It is bilingual in American Sign Language and English, and it is the educational, political, social and economic center of Deaf life in the United States. Beyond degree programs it runs ASL Connect, research centers, an audiology and speech-language clinic, and, through the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, two federally mandated demonstration schools serving children from birth through grade 12.
