CARES - Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services
CARES is the Department of Elder Affairs program, run in partnership with the Agency for Health Care Administration, that decides whether a Floridian meets the medical criteria for Medicaid-funded long-term care, whether in a nursing home or in the community. CARES staff, who include physicians, registered nurses and assessors, complete a free assessment of the applicant, identify what care is actually needed, and recommend the least restrictive appropriate placement. The program works from 17 field offices statewide. For families of adults with disabilities, CARES is the gate to Medicaid long-term care funding outside the APD waiver.
