Family Care Councils of Florida
The statewide Family Care Council is the umbrella for Florida's 15 local Family Care Councils. Family Care Councils are Florida-specific statutory bodies. Members are volunteers appointed by the Governor, and are themselves people with developmental disabilities or their family members. Councils mentor families, run educational forums, review Agency for Persons with Disabilities policy, brief legislators, and advocate for people with developmental disabilities and their families. They are not service providers and hold no funds for individuals. The network has operated for more than thirty years and consists of one statewide council and 15 local area councils. APD's own pre-enrollment materials point families to the Family Care Council as the place to discuss priority categories with other families and self-advocates, which makes it the sanctioned peer route into a system that is otherwise hard to navigate.
