Central State Hospital
Central State Hospital in Milledgeville was once the largest mental institution in the world, with more than 12,000 residents at its peak. It is now a 182-bed maximum-security forensic hospital, taking people committed for pre-trial evaluation, restoration to competency and insanity evaluations from across Georgia. It no longer admits people with developmental disabilities as inpatients. Two other parts of the campus still touch the disability community: Central Care Community Services, which runs seven community homes serving 37 people, and a dental clinic that treats people with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in state-managed group homes as well as inpatients.
