Iowa Behavioral Health Service System
The Behavioral Health Service System is Iowa's replacement for the 32 county-based mental health, disability services and substance use regions. House File 2673, signed 15 May 2024, combined mental health, substance use, problem gambling and tobacco services into one state-run system organized around seven HHS districts, and the system went live on 1 July 2025. It serves Iowans who have no insurance or very limited coverage; people with Medicaid or private insurance kept their existing providers. Services cover prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery and crisis, and Your Life Iowa is the statewide 24/7 entry point.
