How to get services in Pennsylvania
Most long-term supports are paid for by Medicaid, often through a waiver program. Start with Medicaid, then get on the program that fits. Many programs have a waiting list, so apply early.
Start here Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (Medicaid) · Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS); County Assistance Offices
Apply online (opens in a new tab) · Call (866) 550-4355 · Your County Assistance Office (CAO).
Pennsylvania is a 1634 state, so people who get SSI get Medical Assistance without a separate application.
People who are aged, blind or have a disability can qualify through disability-related Medical Assistance groups. Waivers through ODP and OLTL serve people who need an institutional level of care.
For children: Medicaid for Children with Special Needs (PH-95): full Medical Assistance for children under 18 with disabilities whose parents earn too much for regular Medicaid.
If you work: Medical Assistance for Workers with Disabilities (MAWD): lets working people with disabilities keep Medical Assistance by paying a monthly premium.
Steps
- Apply online with COMPASS.
- Or call 1-866-550-4355, or go to your County Assistance Office.
- For a child with a disability, ask about PH-95 coverage.
- Send the papers your caseworker asks for.
- When approved, choose a HealthChoices health plan, or one will be picked for you.
